Jannik Sinner continued to show he is capable of going the distance on the clay courts of Roland-Garros as he scythed past Pavel Kotov in what turned out to be a fairly straightforward victory.
Having blown Christopher Eubanks and Richard Gasquet off the court in his first two round wins, with just 10 games conceded apiece, Sinner did not waste too much time in the third round either.
The second seed was on court for two hours and 27 minutes in a performance that was described rock-solid by the official ATP website. He broke Kotov once in each of the three sets to register a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win and is now 7/2 to win the French Open 2024.
That puts him a second favourite behind Carlos Alcaraz (5/2 at the time of writing), who also displayed extreme disdain in his straight-set win against a far trickier opponent in Sebastian Korda. Alcaraz was pushed into a tie-breaker in the second set but that didn’t stop him from his clinical showing.
Sinner’s big issue coming into the tournament had been his hip injury that had forced him to miss the Rome Masters but he acknowledged that he was now fully fit with respect to that issue.
When the Djokovic odds were slashed to 4/1 following his facile win over Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round, he had gone on par with Sinner but this easy nature of the Italian’s victory has meant he now has nudged up to the second spot in the favourites list.
