Not too many would have expected to see Kudermetova here in the semifinals. Not Polina Kudermetova anyway (probably her sister Veronika but she has been out of form too).
The reason for that is very obvious – Polina has rarely won a match or two in a tournament, let alone come through the qualifiers and grabbed four wins in a row after that, taking her total tally to six victories this series.
What makes this journey even more special is she has already overcome Liudmilla Samsonova and Daria Kasatkina on her way here. And the latest victim in her line of wins was Ashlyn Krueger, who put up a bit of a fight before Polina won in straight sets.
A 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Krueger took less than an hour and a half and while she found it difficult to get past Krueger’s serve, the good news for the Russian was she faced just two break-points in the entire match and wasn’t broken even once.
Kalinina Hoping to Make Maiden Hardcourt Final
Kalinina also did not have an opening bye in this tournament which meant she had had to win four on the bounce to reach the semifinals.
After having eased past Wang Yafan in the first round, Kalinina’s biggest test came in the form of Diana Shnaider in the second round where she was a 4/1 underdog going into the match. A three-set win over her Russian opponent gave her a spot in the third round.
She eased past Yue Yuan there and while the local girl Kimberly Birrell gave her a good fight, Kalinina completed a three-set win over her to march into the semifinals.
What this means is that Kalinina has already won half the number of matches in one tournament that she had in the entire 2024 season on this surface. Can she take that step further?
