Reilly Opelka v Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the world number 31 Mpetshi Perricard and the 293rd-ranked Opelka.
Opelka Stuns Djokovic
After having won a couple of titles in 2022 – in Houston and Dallas – Opelka disappeared from the tennis scene thanks to a string of fitness-related concerns.
It’s only now, in 2025 that he has finally come back fully fit and firing at the highest level.
Still when he overcame Agustin Gomez Federico and Matteo Arnaldi in the first two rounds of this competition, it looked like it was par for the course given Opelka’s serving prowess. Sure he wasn’t the overwhelming favourite in either of these matches but at the same time nobody was overly surprised he won.
Which is why when he took to court against Novak Djokovic, he was a whopping 19/2 second favourite going into the encounter.
Which is also why despite Djokovic being unable to break Opelka in the first set, it felt like it was probably a matter of time before the multiple-time Grand Slam winner would turn things around.
Which is why it surprise started to turn into disbelief when Opelka refused to let up, winning the tie-breaker and then earning himself an early break of serve in the second set.
Very soon Opelka had served out the match, winning in an hour and 41 minutes and will now take on the 21-year-old Frenchman for a place in the final.
Mpetshi Perricard Stretched by Mensik
Unlike Opelka, Mpetshi Perricard had entered his quarterfinal as an 8/11 favourite to get past Jakub Mensik and while he needed an hour and 34 minutes to do, the Frenchman was a straight-set winner.
After having sent out Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe in what were surprise results before this, Mpetshi Perricard came away a 7-5, 7-6 (5) winner over Mensik to seal his place in the semifinal.
A winner at both, the Lyon Open and Swiss Indoors last year. Mpetshi Perricard hammered 19 aces and did not face a single break-point in a match that was filled with short points.
And while Mpetshi Perricard himself got just two chances to break his opponent, he did so once – in the first set – before wrapping things up in a tie-breaker in the second.
Opelka v Mpetshi Perricard Prediction
What this means is the semifinal could turn out to be a match of fine margins that needs one, or even two or three tie-breakers to eke out a result.
