Shang Juncheng v Kei Nishikori Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both players have won one apiece.
Nishikori made it 1-0 at the 2023 Atlanta Open before Juncheng levelled things out at the 2024 Chengdu Open.
Juncheng Registers Comeback Win over Marozsan
Having started out a 3/5 favourite in his quarterfinal match against Fabian Marozsan, Juncheng Shang looked to be at sea when he lost the opening set in the manner that he did.
The 19-year-old was blown away in 25 minutes after getting broken twice to leave him with a lot of question-marks.
What followed was a treat to watch as the Chinese player found those solutions rather commendably to come back and win 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to grab a place in the final. He was never broken again and got the better of his opponent’s serve once apiece in the two sets that followed.
This win followed straight-set victories over Coleman Wong and Pedro Martinez and another one here will take him to his second career final.
Nishikori Overcomes Norrie
Having entered this competition ranked outside the top 100, Nishikori is now a win away from breaking into the top 60. And this has been possible thanks to his fighting efforts in two successive rounds in which he has surprised Karen Khachanov and Cameron Norrie.
After easing to a straight-set win over Denis Shapovalov in the first round, Nishikori needed three sets to overcome the 4/6 favourite Khachanov in the second.
And then against Norrie, he registered a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win in a match lasting an hour and 42 minutes. Nishikori got 73% of his first serves in and won 78% of those even while getting broken just once in the entire match.
Juncheng v Nishikori Prediction
Nishikori will hold the aces here in the semifinal but his younger opponent – Juncheng is 16 years younger- could pull off something special here given how he has grown as a tennis player over the last 12 months.
