Aryna Sabalenka v Polina Kudermetova Head to Head
Sabalenka and Kudermetova have never faced off in a competitive match before this
Sabalenka Ends Mirra’s Run
Given the kind of form Mirra Andreeva was in, one almost expected her to come out all guns blazing at Sabalenka. But the world number one showed us, again, she is made of sterner stuff and quelled Andreeva’s challenge with consummate ease.
In a match that went on for just over an hour and a half, Sabalenka did face eight break-points but saved all of them through her composure. On the other hand, she needed just five chances to break Andreeva three times to clinch a place in the final.
Sabalenka won 6-3, 6-2 to make this her fourth successive straight-set win following her victories over Renata Zarazua, Yulia Putintseva and Marie Bouzkova before this.
Can she add to her title-winning journey, one that saw her start the 2024 season with an Australian Open victory and end it with one in Wuhan?
Kudermetova Surprises Kalinina
That Polina Kudermetova has been a revelation in this tournament goes without saying.
The Russian has never made the final of a WTA event before this and at the start of the 2024 season was ranked outside the top 180. There weren’t any special performances at the highest level too, barring a quarterfinal appearance at Seoul.
Kudermetova was forced to play in the qualifiers as a result of that and one would have thought that her journey here would be short-lived once she made the main draw.
She had a surprise for everyone instead.
A win over Xinyu Wang took her to the second round where she edged out the 4/6 favourite Liudmilla Samsonova. And then starting out as a 7/5 underdog against Daria Kasatkina, Kudermetova slayed her too before getting straight-set wins over Ashlyn Krueger and Anhelina Kalinina.
While getting past Sabalenka might be a bridge too far for Kudermetova, she would be mighty chuffed with her performance in this tournament so far and will hope to carry that confidence through.
Sabalenka v Kudermetova Prediction
It shouldn’t take Sabalenka too much to get going and while Kudermetova might try and ruffle a few features, the world number one can be expected to grab this in two like she has done all tournament.
