Gael Monfils v Nishesh Basavareddy Head to Head
There has been only previous meeting between these two players which came last week in Brisbane. Monfils had won that in three sets.
Monfils Eases Past Diaz Acosta
Following the aforementioned win over Nishesh Basavareddy in his Brisbane opener, Monfils had run into Novak Djokovic which was a case of hitting an immovable object especially in Australia.
And Monfils was blown away in straight sets there.
He has come back well here in Auckland, especially after he began slowing in his opener against Pedro Martinez in the first round. After losing the first set to Martinez, Monfils needed a tie-breaker to win the next.
And from that point onward, the Frenchman has had it easy.
Jan-Lennard Struff was demolished in straight sets in the second round before Monfils crushed Facundo Diaz Acosta 6-3, 6-1 in his quarterfinals. Diaz Acosta lasted an hour and 18 minutes as Monfils saved all of the three break-points he faced in the encounter.
The last time Monfils made it this far in a hardcourt event was in Doha last year. And it’s been about 15 months since Monfils went all the way to the final stage which happened in Stockholm in 2023.
Can he do that again here?
Basavareddy Stuns Michelsen
That Nishesh Basavareddy is having the time of his life cannot be overstated.
The 19-year-old from USA was playing Futures events less than a year back, been ranked 457th at the end of the 2023 season.
Fast forward to a little over a year ahead and Basavareddy is on the verge of breaking into the top 100. He had started the tournament ranked 133rd in the world – which was already his career-best ranking and he can be expected to move up about 20 places even he doesn’t beat Monfils.
Which isn’t to say he can’t because the kind of opponents he has gotten past speaks volumes about his chances here.
Following a win over Botic van de Zandschulp in the qualifiers, he has already sent Alejandro Tabilo and Alex Michelsen packing from the tournament.
Michelsen was 3/5 to win that quarterfinal and after he had grabbed the first set 6-2, it almost seemed like he had no business to lose it. Basavareddy came back to clinch his semifinal place 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
He could prove to be a handful here.
Monfils v Basavareddy Prediction
At 38, Monfils is double the age of his opponent and so much more experience of playing in such situations. That being said, does he have the legs to test the younger Basavareddy? We think Basavareddy will make up for the experience with his youthful exuberance and could win this.
Monfils v Basavareddy Tips
- Basavareddy to win: 8/11
- Basavareddy to win in three sets: 3/1
