She had defeated Rebecca Sramkova and Paula Badosa in Brisbane last week before going down fighting to Ons Jabeur. And here, Avanesyan had already gotten past Xiyu Wang and Greet Minnen in straight sets.

Kessler Quells Yastremska Challenge
Unlike Avanesyan, McCartney Kessler had to play her quarterfinal and she did a solid job of getting past the top seeded Dayana Yastremska.
Kessler, who had overcome Magda Linette in the first round of the Brisbane International last week, eased to a 7-5, 6-4 win over Yastremska to move into the semis.
While Kessler was broken three times in the encounter, she was able to finish things off in an hour and 35 minutes, getting past her opponent’s serve on five occasions.
Interestingly, Kessler was a break down in both the sets but fought back admirably to complete her straight-set win, having earlier delivered similar results against Rebecca Sramkova and Maria Lourdes Carle.
