Nuno Borges v Zizou Bergs Head to Head
They have never faced off at the highest level or even on the Challenger circuit. They did, however, feature in a Futures match in 2020 and Borges had won that hardcourt encounter in straight sets.
Borges in Another Stunning Comeback
Coming into his quarterfinal against Jakub Mensik, Borges had won successive matches in three sets but only after losing the first set.
And with Mensik being a form player and a higher-ranked one, Borges had come into the quarterfinals at rather long odds of 9/5 to surprise him.
When he fell a set behind, those odds changed dramatically in favour of Mensik but the one other thing that would have also happened is given his opponent a sense of the kind of fight Borges possessed.
Because Mensik was 3-0 up at one stage in the first set but was forced into a tie-breaker which he finally won.
From that point on, Mensik was broken thrice in the second set and while they did not have any more breaks in the final set, it turned into Borges’ favour in the tie-breaker that followed.
Exhaustion aside, Borges would know he has the capability to test out some of his peers at the moment.
Bergs in a Comeback Win over Carballes Baena
Zizou Bergs has gone in to each of the five matches he’s played in this competition – which includes a couple of qualifying rounds – as a favourite and he has lived up to those odds every time.
This includes his quarterfinal where he a 3/5 favourite against Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena and won it in three after losing the opening set.
The first set proved to be a bit of a struggle for Bergs who got just 53% of his first serves in and won just four of the eight points off them. He improved that in the second set but more importantly won a lot of the points off them as his opponent withered away quickly.
Bergs will hope he can now make it to his first ever ATP final but standing between him and that achievement is a man who has shown his propensity to keep fighting till the very end.
