Elise Mertens v Maya Joint Head to Head
Mertens and Joint have never faced off before this.
Mertens Edges Past Kudermetova
A finalist in this tournament last year, Elise Mertens was forced to withdraw from the first tournament she wanted to play this season last week but has come through well here.
After starting out as a favourite in both her first two rounds against Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and Renata Zarazua, Mertens faced Veronika Kudermetova in the quarterfinal here.
And while Kudermetova has fallen to 77th in the world, she was once a top-10 player and very recently at that. A keen tussle was expected and while it did go into the third set, Mertens would be surprised with the manner in which that happened.
Mertens won the first set with two breaks of serves and then lost her serve three times in a row in the second to be bagelled. Then, in the decider, Mertens stormed back to get the better of opponent’s serve three more times to come through.
She now faces a surprise semifinalist in the form of the 118th-ranked Maya Joint.
Joint Stuns Kenin
Just 18 years of age and Joint is making heads turn with her tennis.
Till last year, Joint wasn’t even playing at the highest level and here she is with a semifinal berth under her belt. Making it even more special is the manner in which she’s got there.
Joint’s played three matches in Brisbane so far and dropped a measely 11 games across them – that’s less than four in a match or two every set.
And it’s not like her opponents have been pushovers either.
After overcoming Olga Danilovic in the first round, Joint got the better of Magda Linette and former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin in her next two matches to storm into the semifinals.
And the manner in which she is playing, she might not go down without a fight here.
Mertens v Joint Prediction
While Mertens is a favourite she is only just ahead at 17/20 even as Joint starting off 19/20 to grab this. Backing the Aussie to continue with her superb run.
