Carlos Alcaraz v Nuno Borges Head to Head
Their only previous meeting before this came at the 2023 Barcelona Open and Alcaraz won in straight sets.
Alcaraz Easy Winner over Nishoka
Carlos Alcaraz was pushed around in one of the sets in his opener by Alexander Shevchenko but there was no such respite for Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round.
While Nishioka did come into his own as the match progressed, it was still a long distance off from the levels that Alcaraz was playing. And in the end, it took the Spaniard a mere hour and 22 minutes to make it to the third round.
He won 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 with six breaks of serves from the 10 opportunities he got. On the other hand, Alcaraz did not face a single break-point and looked as good with his serve as he has in a long time.
The world number three got 60% of his first serves in but once he had those, he won 89% of the points. And even when he didn’t, Alcaraz clinched a whopping 71% of the points.
Things could get a tad more challenging in the third round but given how Alcaraz has played so far it shouldn’t be much of an issue.
Borges Crushes Thompson
Nuno Borges had come into his second round match against Jordan Thompson as a 17/20 favourite – i.e. only slightly ahead on bookmakers’ odds.
As the match went along, it became more and more evident that Thompson was struggling with a foot injury and by the end of the encounter, the Aussie was barely able to walk.
Not that Borges could do too much about it – he had to play the shots not the player – and he did an excellent job of it. In a match that lasted an hour and 48 minutes, Borges had continued with his good form to win 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and seal his place in the third round.
This follows Borges’ last year’s appearance in the fourth round of this competition and while facing Alcaraz means it could make it that much more difficult to emulate that performance, he certainly won’t be overawed by the occasion.
Alcaraz v Borges Prediction
The Spaniard still has enough in arsenal to take Borges down but we might see a bit of a fight here and could also see a set getting taken off the defending French Open and Wimbledon winner.
