Jack Draper hasn’t been around on the circuit for a long time but he looks to understand the crowds well.
Instead of fighting a partisan Aussie crowd in his second round match against Thanasi Kokkinakis, he used the alleged insults hurled at him as a morale-booster to edge ahead of his opponent and seal his place in the round of 32.
Incidentally, in the post-match press conference, Draper admitted he faced a lot of insults from those sitting in the front rows but instead of feeling put off, it charged him up like nothing else.
Draper came through in a four hour, 35-minute thriller that went to five sets before he won 6-7(3), 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
And as luck would have it, the world number 18 will face another Aussie in round three, Aleksandar Vukic.
Vukic Upsets Korda
Aleksandar Vukic was expected to get past Damir Dzumhur in his opener with some ease but needed five sets to come through that match. In the second round though. he was up against the 1/4 favourite Sebastian Korda and used the crowd support to complete a stunning upset against the world number 22.
The Aussie who had never made it past the second round at any Grand Slam before this – Wimbledon 2023-24 being his best – clinched that berth with a 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Later he called it the best win of his career, pointing to the fact that he always thought he could do better than just a second round spot at a major.
Vukic, who had earlier beaten David Goffin in Brisbane, only to lose successive matches after that, looks to have turned the corner a big way. Can he make it three wins in a row?
