Novak Djokovic v Tomas Machac Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece.
In 2023, Djokovic defeated Machac in a tough, three-setter in Dubai before the Czech player had his revenge in Geneva on clay last year.
Djokovic Drops a Set v Faria Too
Following his opening round win over Nishesh Basavareddy, Djokovic could have put down the loss of a set to his American opponent down to rustiness and a bit of a slow start that he is usually accustomed to.
It happened again though in the second round when he took on the virtually unheralded Jaime Faria. The 21-year-old Portuguese had come through three qualifying rounds and then beaten Pavel Kotov to set up this second round meeting with the 24-time Grand Slam winner.
And when Djokovic ran away with the first set in a jiffy, it looked like he had found his mojo to destroy some of these players ranked lower down the rung.
In the second set too, Djokovic broke Faria to go 2-1 up but then lost his serve in successive games to hand Faria the initiative. While Faria dropped his serve at 5-3, he regrouped quickly to win the set in the following tie-breaker.
Djokovic might have wrapped the match up quickly after that in four sets but for those looking for signs for his chances to win the title again – there were enough to suggest that the really good players might make things that much more difficult for the Serb.
Machac in a Ripping Win over Opelka
Fans were awaiting a rematch of the Djokovic-Reilly Opelka contest that had happened in Brisbane two weeks ago after the American had shocked Nole there.
Standing in the way of a repeat of that was Tomas Machac though, who needed five sets but managed to knock Opelka out of the competition.
In a match that went on for nearly three and a half hours, Machac came back from the behind twice in the match and staved off 40 Opelka aces to win it in five sets.
Facing a strong server like Opelka is never easy but what Machac did equally well is to not get broken on his serve that easily. He faced eight break-points but Opelka was able to convert just one and Machac won two of the sets in the tie-breakers that followed.
Things will be very different when he takes on Djokovic with the focus more on the rallies and his groundstrokes and the big question is if Machac, who had beaten Sumit Nagal in the opener with ease, still have some steam left in the tank.
Djokovic v Machac Prediction
It’s never easy to bet against the great man Djokovic but it must be said that wins might not come easily for him once he starts taking on these top 30 players given how he has played so far. There have been no complaints about injuries so far from the former world number one which is a good thing but things could get tougher.
Still backing him to come through here with Machac expected to scalp a set while doing that.
