Jakub Mensik is just 19 years of age but already seems to be coming into his own.
It’s not just his age, it’s also the fact that he hasn’t been on the circuit for far too long. In fact Mensik featured in his first ever Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open and is in just his fifth major of his career.
And already, this will be the third time he will be featuring in the third round.
This time around, Mensik has beaten Nikoloz Basilashvili and stunned Casper Ruud in the first two rounds to get this far, emulating his record from the 2023 and 2024 US Open.
Against Ruud, Mensik needed four sets but rarely looked out of control as he clinched his place against Alcaraz 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Fokina Shocks Auger-Aliassime
Felix Auger-Aliassime looked to have shown the kind of progress this season that would have warranted most to vouch for a second week viewing from him in this competition.
And while things weren’t as straightforward as he would have thought, Auger-Aliassime looked to have lived up to that expectation by taking a two sets to love lead in his second round match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Fokina had other ideas though as he came back from those two sets down to grab a shock win over the 1/3 favourite from Canada.
In a match that fell a quarter short of five hours, Fokina clinched four breaks of serves over the next two sets, saved four break-points in the fifth before breaking Auger-Aliassime in eighth game to seal the win.
This follows his first round win over Juncheng Shang who was forced to retire from their opener.
