Not that Alexander Zverev was expected to face too much trouble but the manner in which he dismantled Pedro Martinez, following on from an equally easy first round win would make people take notice.
Zverev had gone in as a 1/50 favourite in his second round match against Martinez, much like he had against Lucas Pouille in his opener, and this time around he scythed through his opponent like a hot knife through butter.
The match lasted four minutes short of two hours but Zverev saved all of the six break-points he faced while getting the better of his opponent 6-1, 6-4, 6-1.
He will now face a player who is on his Australian Open debut, has a best ranking of 86th – his current ranking – and hadn’t played a main draw match at the highest level since last October.
Fearnley Makes it Past Cazaux
Arthur Cazaux looked to have made a solid start to his second round match against Jacob Fearnley but once the Briton came into his own there was only one winner.
Having gotten past Nick Kyrgios in the first round in front of the wildly raucous and partisan Aussie crowds, Fearnley would have imagined his second round encounter to be a slightly easier one.
That thought, if he actually did have one, came crashing down when Cazaux broke Fearnley twice in the first set to take the lead. And things looked to be turning from bad to worse when Fearnley dropped his serve early in the second set too.
It was at this point that the Brit tried to take control by first breaking back and then doing that two more times in the set to level the proceedings.
From there on Fearnley grew more and more in confidence and in about three hours had made it to the third round at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
