Having won the Brisbane International before the start of the Australian Open, Aryna Sabalenka has now added two more victories to her tally to take it up to seven wins without a loss.
And she has done that by usurping Sloane Stephens and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets apiece.
In a match lasting an hour and 36 minutes, Sabalenka survived a bit of a scare in both the sets before coming through 6-3, 7-5.
The first set saw Sabalenka unable to hold her serve on two occasions but she had already broken her opponent both times before that. A third break won her the set.
In the second, Sabalenka fell 3-1 behind before conquering Bouzas Maneiro’s serve twice in a row to grab her third round spot.
She now faces an opponent who, much like her, is also on a seven-match winning streak.
Tauson Blows Maria Away
Clara Tauson was made to fight for her first round win over Linda Noskova but things got so much better for her in the second round.
Playing former Wimbledon semifinalist Tatjana Maria for a place in the third round, the Auckland Open winner Tauson dropped just four games in her win.
The match lasted 69 minutes and while Tauson did lose her serve once, it came in the back-end of the second set by which time too much damage had been already done for Maria to recover from.
Tauson has beaten just two top-10 players in her career before this and none in the top five. Can she turn things around here?
