Mirra Andreeva v Magdalena Frech Head to Head
Andreeva and Frech will be facing off for the first time in their careers.
Andreeva Edges Out Uchijima
In one of the cagiest encounters of the tournament so far, it looked like there was nothing to separate the two players before Mirra Andreeva won the final set tie-breaker against Moyuka Uchijima to scrape through to the third round.
The script wasn’t like this though with Andreeva having gone into her second round match as a 1/33 favourite to ease to a win.
And while she took 35 minutes to clinch the first set, it looked like the die had been cast.
Except that her Japanese opponent had some other ideas and broke Mirra twice in the second set to seal the equaliser. In the third, Uchijima then broke again for a 2-1 lead only for the world number 15 to retaliate with one of her own in the very next game.
Uchijima had a chance to then serve out for the match at 5-4 only for her to get broken again before Andreeva won the tie-breaker 10-8.
Andreeva will need to change things around with her serve if she wants to go deep into this competition.
Frech Overpowers Blinkova with Strange Score
How often has a competitive match at this level started off with a bagel in each of the first two sets, going to each of the players?
Because that rare occurrence was on show when Magdalena Frech took to court for her second round match against Anna Blinkova.
Frech came back from a 0-6 scoreline in the opening set to win the next two 6-0, 6-2 and complete the most remarkable of turnarounds in the competition for the ages.
This followed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Polina Kudermetova in the first round, making it back to back wins for the world number 26 for the first time in five tournaments.
Can she make it three in a row?
Andreeva v Frech Prediction
Andreeva is more powerful of the two players but can be vulnerable at times with her serve and it would be interesting to see if Frech can take advantage of that. We believe Andreeva has it in her to grab this in two.
Andreeva v Frech Tips
- Andreeva to win in straight sets: 4/6
- Over 19/5 games in the match: 17/20
