Jannik Sinner v Marcos Giron Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the 2023 Shanghai Masters which Sinner had won in straight sets.
Sinner Drops a Set to Schoolkate
Jannik Sinner made an uncharacteristically slow start to his second round match against local lad Tristan Schoolkate but was he wasn’t down for too long.
The defending Australian Open overcame the world number 173 despite losing his first set since last year’s Shanghai Masters in this encounter.
He took two hours and 50 minutes and did not face a single break-point after he was broken the one time in the first set, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
Sinner would probably not lose too much sleep over the loss of the set and might not have much of a problem against Marcos Giron either but the top players including Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and even Alexander Zverev would all be watching for any signs of weakness.
Can he shrug those signs off?
Giron Edges Past Etcheverry
Having gone into his second round match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry with no clear favourites, little did Marcos Giron know that the match would turn out to be exactly like that too.
Giron required a touch over four hours in his five-set win over Etcheverry, requiring to keep thwarting the endless number of comebacks that his Argentine kept making in the encounter.
Both players were broken eight times during the match, with Giron even facing a total of 19 break-points. At one stage, Etcheverry went 4-2 up in the final set having been down a set on two occasions but it was at this point that Giron strode right back into the contest.
He broke Etcheverry in the very next game and carried that momentum into the ninth to grab the set and the match.
This follows his four-set win over Yannick Hanfmann in the first round.
Sinner v Giron Prediction
Sinner should be back at his best and shouldn’t have much of a problem here as he looks to down Giron in quick time to set up a potential meeting with either Holger Rune or Miomir Kecmanovic. Backing a straight-set result.
Sinner v Giron Tips
- Sinner to win in straight sets: 1/2
- Under 30.5 games in the match: 4/5
