Learner Tien v Corentin Moutet Head to Head
Tien and Moutet have never faced off in a competitive match before this
Tien Sends Medvedev Away
It was a late night epic for the ages as Learner Tien taught Daniil Medvedev a lesson to remember.
In what turned out to be the biggest upset of the competition thus far, Medvedev failed to reproduce any of the form that had seen him reach the final at the Australian Open on three previous occasions as he lost in five to the American qualifier.
Tien won 6-3, 7-6 (4,) 6-7, (8), 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) despite giving up on a match-point in the third set, helping him notch up his second career win in a Grand Slam match.
His first had come in the opening round of the competition in which he had defeated Camillo Ugo Carbabelli in another five-setter.
Tien, who will stand to break into the top 100 after this win, now has a chance to become a top 80 player if he can go past his next opponent too.
Moutet Shrugs off Slow Start to Best Krueger
Corentin Moutet hadn’t played in any pre-season competitions and nor was he a part of any of the other ATP competitions in the lead-up to the Australian Open – at Hong Kong, Auckland, Adelaide or Brisbane.
Which is why it was no surprise Moutet started off a 16/5 underdog in his opener against the local lad Alexei Popyrin. And yet, he came back from losing the first set to the Aussie to win it in four.
Something similar repeated when Moutet took to court for his second round match against Mitchell Krueger as he got broken at 4-5 while serving to stay in the set and lost the opening set.
Moutet stormed back into contention with a solitary break in the second before he frittered away two breaks of serves and five set-points in the third.
Things could have gone really out of hand from there on but Moutet showed remarkable resolve in clinching the tie-breaker that followed and grabbed the win in the fourth set much like he had lost the first.
Tien v Moutet Prediction
Moutet’s never made the third round at the Australian Open but has the experience of having played in the fourth round at both, the French Open and US Open. Tien had never won a Grand Slam match in three previous attempts and is now suddenly playing in the third round.
We think Moutet does have a bit of an advantage as a result of that and it could get difficult for Tien to push the ante yet again after the kind of match he had against Medvedev.
