Sonego Stuns Fonseca
A lot was expected out of Joao Fonseca after the qualifier had taken Andrey Rublev out in the first round of the competition and that reflected in what the bookmakers thought as well.
Lorenzo Sonego, Fonseca’s second round opponent was a whopping 37/10 to go past him and in a five-setter that went on for three hours and 41 minutes, he came through to make it to the third round – the second time ever he has done that at the Australian Open.
The best part about the Sonego win was his serving which saw him win 77% of his first serve points, with only one break of serve coming off that. In response he broke Fonseca five times in the match, including once in the final set off the only break-point that Sonego got there.
Sonego, who had taken down Stan Wawrinka in the first round, now has a very good chance to make it to the fourth round for the first time here – and the fourth time in his career at Grand Slams.
Marozsan Stuns Tiafoe
While Sonego was a whopping success in his previous match, Fabian Marozsan had also gone into his second round match against Frances Tiafoe as an 8/5 underdog.
And when he lost the first set and then went two sets to one down, Marozsan would have thought the writing was on the wall. Or at least his fans would have.
Instead, the Hungarian 25-year-old fought back from the brink, staving off four break-points in the very game of the fourth set, two more in the fifth and four in the seventh before clinching the all-important break in the 10th to level the match.
And Marozsan then ran away with the encounter in the final set with a 6-1 drubbing of Tiafoe in the final set.
