Paula Badosa v Olga Danilovic Head to Head
They have had three previous meetings, one on the ITF circuit and twice on WTA, but none since 2019. Badosa won that ITF match and they are 1-1 on the WTA circuit with Danilovic bagging a straight set win in Guadalajara in 2019.
Badosa Edges Past Kostyuk
Following successive straight set wins over Xinyu Wang and Talia Gibson in the first two rounds of the tournament, Badosa had her first tough one when she was taken to a three-setter by Marta Kostyuk.
Having gone in as a 2/5 favourite, Badosa dropped her serve in the very first game of the encounter but clawed her way back into the encounter by breaking back in the sixth game. At 4-4 she saved five more break-points before breaking Kostyuk in the next game to clinch the set.
Kostyuk responded with three successive breaks of serves and while Badosa pulled back with two of her own, she was unable to stop her opponent from running away with the set.
The third set turned out to be a tad anti-climatic with a solitary break of serve in the second game pulling Badosa forward – and she remained there till the end of the match.
This will be Badosa’s second appearance in the fourth round of this tournament with the Spaniard having never gone beyond that.
Danilovic Shocker for Pegula
When Olga Danilovic lost her opener at the Hobart International to the little-known Aussie Maya Joint, not too many would have thought she would be in with a chance to make the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.
That might not have been the case even when she overcame Arantxa Rus in the first round here.
But when Danilovic, starting out a 21/10 underdog against Liudmilla Samsonova dropped just three games in her second round encounter, she had begun to turn heads.
Surely she wouldn’t be able to repeat something similar against the world number six, Jessica Pegula too?
Danilovic was 4/1 to win this one but an hour and 32 minutes later, Danilovic had saved all the six break-points she faced before clinching her place in the fourth round with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win.
And while she will kick-start as a second-favourite against Badosa too, we aren’t sure anyone is taking those odds too seriously for this encounter.
Badosa v Danilovic Prediction
If what we have seen in the tournament is anything to go by, we could be in for a close encounter that could either way and at 9/5, a Danilovic win looks like a tempting bet.
