Tommy Paul v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players – at the Australian Open, Miami Open and US Open, all in 2023 – and Paul has won every single time.
Paul Tames Carballes Baena
Roberto Carballes Baena had already seemed like he had punched above his weight by reaching the third round of a major outside of clay. So when he took on Tommy Paul, there was no doubting who the favourite was.
Paul, who had earlier needed five sets to get past Christopher O’Connell in the opener and was then stretched to four by Kei Nishikori, was a straight-set winner over Carballes Baena in the third round.
The world number 11 spent two hours and 24 minutes on court, of which nearly half were in the first set in which he was stretched to a tie-breaker. This was after Paul was two breaks of serves up.
From the time the set went into the tie-breaker, there was no looking back for Paul, who won it 7-0 before dropping just two more games in the entire match from that point onward.
Paul now has a chance to make it to the quarterfinals here for the second time in his career having done that in 2023 as well when he had lost to Novak Djokovic.
Fokina in a Comeback Win (Again)
For the second match in a row, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came back from two sets down to overcome his opponent and enter the fourth round at this tournament for the first time in his career.
Following his five-set victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime in which he had lost the first two sets in tie-breakers, Fokina was 3-6, 4-6 down in about 70 minutes against Jakub Mensik and looked to be headed out.
He saved a couple of early break-points and missed a set-point before saving two match-points in the tie-breaker that followed. The turnaround came when he won it 9-7 before grabbing the fourth set with a break of serve in the seventh game.
By this time the tide had completely turned and while Mensik did try to put up a fight one last time, there was no looking back for Fokina who won the final set 6-2.
Paul v Fokina Prediction
While Paul still starts a favourite, Fokina’s rhythm, momentum and grit could make for a good contest that could go either way.
