Novak Djokovic v Jiri Lehecka Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the 2024 United Cup and Djokovic had beaten Lehecka in three sets there.
Djokovic Blows Rings Around Machac
After going into his first two rounds as 1/25 and 1/50 favourite to win them, Djokovic’s odds to beat Tomas Machac were lengthened to 1/4.
It was a stark contrast from the previous two rounds thanks to the quality of the opponent and the manner in which Djokovic had struggled from time to time in those two matches against Nishesh Basavareddy and Jamie Faria.
This time around though, there were no struggles as Djokovic claimed his fourth round place at the Australian Open yet another time with a straightforward 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over Machac.
Djokovic did have a stomach bug going against him and thought that the electronic calling was getting it wrong against him but two hours and 22 minutes later, he had managed to defy it all to march into the fourth round.
Later he admitted he hadn’t yet found his best tennis which can only mean one thing – opponents like Lehecka, beware!
Lehecka Batters Bonzi
A quarterfinalist here in 2023, Jiri Lehecka did not waste too much time on the court either as he raced off to a straight-set win over Benjamin Bonzi in his third round match.
Lehecka, who had dropped a set in his opener against Li Tu but was then on court for around an hour in the second retirement of Hugo Gaston, won 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 to set up his Sunday appointment with Djokovic.
The world number 29 is one of the very few unbeaten players in the season remaining as he notched up his eighth win of the year following his Brisbane International title.
In a match that lasted an hour and 49 minutes, Lehecka did not lose his serve even once while getting the better of Bonzi’s service on five occasions. He was aided by his opponent’s 31 unforced errors but also hit 33 winners to go with that.
Can he repeat this kind of play against the former world number one as well?
Djokovic v Lehecka Prediction
Backing Djokovic to win this won’t be a surprise here but Lehecka does have some form going his way and we expect him to do better than lose in three sets here.
