Svitolina Turns Things Around against Paolini
A 7/10 favourite to win her third round match against Elina Svitolina, Jasmine Paolini looked to have kick-started things in the right way by shrugging off an early break and breaking her opponent three times in a row to pocket the first set.
From that point onward, however, things changed and how.
It was a slow turnaround for starters with Svitolina bagging an early break in the second set but try as she could, Paolini failed to find a way past her opponent’s serve. In all, she earned just one break-point in the set and frittered it away.
But if the world number four thought things would get better in the final set, Svitolina had other ideas. Three breaks of serves, all for Svitolina helped her bagel Paolini and register a three-set win – joining her husband Gael Monfils in beating world number fours to make the fourth round at this competition.
Earlier Svitolina had eased past Sorana Cirstea and Caroline Dolehide in her first two rounds.
Kudermetova Stuns Haddad Maia
Following her wins over Olivia Gadecki and Katie Boulter, Veronika Kudermetova did not face much of a challenge from the 17/20 favourite Beatriz Haddad Maia in her third round encounter.
Kudermetova, who had bowed out of the first round at the Brisbane International before watching her sister Polina make the final, had then entered the quarterfinals in Hobart.
Still, given her overall form, one might not have been expecting her to make the fourth round at a Grand Slam she had never done that before and was coming off just one main draw wins over the past two editions.
The Russian crushed Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-2 to make the fourth round and now has a good chance to make her second major quarterfinal.
