Iga Swiatek v Eva Lys Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came on the clay courts of the 2022 Stuttgart Open and Swiatek had dropped just two games on her way to a win.
Swiatek in a Punishing Win over Raducanu
Emma Raducanu had implied before her third round match that she would try to do what she can but playing against Iga Swiatek was always going to be difficult.
It turned out to be a lot more than just challenging as Raducanu failed to do much of note, winning just one game in the encounter. In winning 6-1, 6-0 against Raducanu, Swiatek recorded her second bagel of the tournament having earlier registered a crushing win over Rebecca Sramkova in which she had lost just two games.
And what that meant was that Swiatek now has 28 bagels to her name in Grand Slam tournaments.
Why this becomes important here is that while Swiatek is still ranked second and has been winning matches with ease, there had been a slight shift in the manner of those wins – even against the lower-ranked players, matches have been more laboured.
These couple of victories would given Swiatek a boost as she heads into the later stages of the tournament.
For now though, Swiatek has a relatively easier opponent in Eva Lys, who is ranked 128th in the world.
Lucky Loser Lys Lays Cristian Low
After losing to Destanee Aiava in the third round of the qualifiers, Eva Lys became the third lucky loser to make it to the main draw of the competition but had to wait till the final 10 minutes before the start of her match to be confirmed.
Since then Lys hasn’t looked back, defeating Kimberly Birrell, Varvara Gracheva and Jaqueline Cristian in successive matches to enter the fourth round of the tournament.
Having never been ranked in the top 100 before the start of this competition, Lys had won only one match in a Grand Slam competition and that had come in 2023 at the US Open.
A comeback from behind win over Cristian in the third round, has meant whatever happens from here on, she would have broken that top-100 barrier when the rankings are updated next week.
Unfortunately for her, she has Swiatek up against her which might not end too well.
