Jannik Sinner v Holger Rune Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings between these two players and both, Sinner and Rune have won two apiece.
Rune went 2-0 up by winning at the 2022 Sofia Open and 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters before Sinner levelled it up with victories at the 2023 ATP Finals and the 2024 edition of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Sinner Pummels Giron
In a match that lasted nearly two hours, Jannik Sinner coasted to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Marcos Giron and sealed his fourth round berth.
The scary part, however, was that Sinner was still a touch unhappy about some aspects of his game – his game at the net which he thought wasn’t at its best.
And that might have caused Sinner to get broken that one solitary time in the encounter – it came in the third set when he was serving for a 3-1 lead. Not that it affected Sinner’s game too much as he broke right back and then did it a third time in the set to clinch the win.
This followed a straight-set win over Nicolas Jarry in the first round before Tristan Schoolkate took a set off in the second.
Rune in a Comeback Win over Kecmanovic
Holger Rune has shown signs of a fight in this competition, something that had been lacking in his play in recent times. It had also been the cause of first round exit at the hands of Jiri Lehecka at the Brisbane International earlier this year.
It was this spirit that helped Rune edge out Miomir Kecmanovic, overturning a potential four-set loss to a five-set win.
Rune broke Kecmanovic when the Serb was serving for a 5-2 lead in the fourth set and from that point onward, grabbed the initiative to win 6-7(5), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
With cramps also being a problem for Rune in the final set, it was a mini-miracle that the Danish number one found a way to clinch the victory.
His 83 winners in the match could be attributed to his desire to shorten the points because of those very fitness concerns and they seem to have come off well.
Rune had earlier been stretched to five sets by Zhizhen Zhang and then won in four against Matteo Berrettini which included a couple of tie-breakers.
The big question would be if he’s rested enough coming into this encounter.
Sinner v Rune Prediction
Sinner, at his best, would be difficult to beat in a hardcourt competition and there are no surprises he is starting off a 1/14 favourite here. It still could turn out to be a keen tussle in at least one of the sets with Sinner still having a chance to come through in straight sets.
