Alex de Minaur v Alex Michelsen Head to Head
They have met each other twice in their career, both of which came in 2024. It’s 1-1 on head to head with Michelsen having won in Los Cabos while de Minaur clinching his victory at the French Open.
de Minaur Overturns Solid Cerundolo
The last three seasons in which Alex de Minaur has played at his home Grand Slam, he has made the fourth round.
Unfortunately for him, his run has been ended at that very stage, losing to Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Andrey Rublev in those three fourth round matches.
This time around he has a better chance to make it to the quarterfinals at the only Grand Slam he’s not made it that far as he takes on a player ranked 42nd in the world.
De Minaur will be a lot more confident too, having earlier begun the season with a 2-0 record at the United Cup and then clinched three successive wins here.
Following wins over Botic van de Zandschulp and Tristan Boyer, de Minaur was forced to come back from being a set down to win his third round encounter against Francisco Cerundolo in four sets and nearly four hours.
Can he make his Australian Open quarterfinal debut?
Michelsen Shocks Khachanov
For the second time in the tournament, Alex Michelsen was a 7/5 underdog going into the encounter and for the second time, it did not matter.
Because after having overcome Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets in the first round, Michelsen eased past Karen Khachanov in straight sets to make it to the fourth round of a major for the first time in his career.
A third round entrant at the 2024 Australian Open, Michelsen romped to a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Khachanov in a match lasting two hours and 10 minutes.
Michelsen lost his serve just once in the entire match but more vitally got four opportunities to get the better of his opponent’s serve and did that every single time.
His biggest test comes now when he faces a top-10 player, having never beaten a player ranked that high. Then again, Michelsen hadn’t beaten a top-15 player before getting past Stefanos Tsitsipas before this competition.
de Minaur v Michelsen Prediction
With the home support under his belt and being a higher pedigreed player, we will have to back de Minaur here but expect Micheslen to bag a set at the very least.
de Minaur v Michelsen Tips
- Over 3.5 sets in the match: 4/6
