Ben Shelton v Gael Monfils Head to Head
Shelton and Monfils have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Shelton Takes Down Musetti
In a battle between world numbers 15 and 20, it was the slightly lower-ranked player who came through but not before Ben Shelton had to work for nearly three hours for his win.
Shelton, who had had a tough straight-set win over Brandon Nakashima in the first round and was then taken to four sets by Pablo Carreno-Busta in the second, dropped another set en route the round of 16.
In a rather cagey matches which did not give too many opportunities to either of the players, Shelton was broken twice in the match while getting the better of Lorenzo Musetti’s serve on three occasions.
He led Musetti 3-0 in the fourth set too before his opponent came back to level things out. In the tie-breaker that followed though, a plethora of mini-breaks for both players gave Shelton a match-point at 6-5 which he promptly converted.
Can he now make it to the Australian Open quarterfinals for second time in his career?
Monfils Shocker for Fritz
Taylor Fritz is ranked fourth in the world and was one of those who was a shoo-in to go deep into the tournament, even make the semifinals where he could have been a threat for the defending champion Jannik Sinner (he made it that far).
At 11/2, Gael Monfils wasn’t expected to come close to disrupting Fritz’s chances.
But three hours and eight minutes into the encounter, Monfils had done the unthinkable. Much like his wife, Elina Svitolina who had made the fourth round in the women’s singles draw, Monfils had defeated Fritz in four sets to advance to that stage.
Monfils, a winner over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Daniel Altmaier in the first round, registered a comeback from behind, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory over his much-fancied opponent.
While Monfils won’t start a favourite yet again, it can be unequivocally said his opponent won’t be taking him too lightly here given what has transpired so far.
Shelton v Monfils Prediction
While Shelton is 3/5 to win this, Monfils also comes into this having won eight matches in a row including the title victory in Auckland the previous week. We could see a fourth set at the very least and if fitness doesn’t come into it, even a fifth.
Shelton v Monfils Tips
