Lorenzo Sonego v Learner Tien Head to Head
Sonego and Tien have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Sonego Wears Down Marozsan
For over two hours in the contest, it was tough to understand who might go on to win this third round match, Lorenzo Sonego or Fabian Marozsan.
Then came the second set tie-breaker in which Marozsan took a 6-3 lead and had three set-points take a two to nothing lead. That could have spelled doom for Sonego.
What happened after that is a rather stunning tale of a turnaround as Sonego won five points in a row to win the set and from that point onward, needed a mere 67 more minutes and the loss of just three more games to clinch a place in the fourth round.
This followed his first round win against Stan Wawrinka and a second round shock of Joao Fonseca which took him five sets.
It has taken him to the fourth round for the first time at Australian Open and fourth time in majors. Sonego, however, has never made the quarterfinals at any Grand Slam and what better opportunity than playing against someone ranked 121st in the world.
Tien Eases Past Moutet
Learner Tien was forced into a three-setter by Gregoire Barrere in the opening qualifier but slowly and steadily he found his groove to make it to the main draw.
He wasn’t expected to go any farther from there, especially when he took on Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
Now Medvedev might not have been in the best of his form, but he is a three-time Australian Open finalist and surely a better player than someone who has never been a top-100 in his career.
Tien, however, wasn’t paying too much attention to the script, warding off Medvedev’s late fightback to win 10-7 in the final set tie-breaker.
And in the third round, Tien was forced to save a set-point and missed four of his own before winning the first set tie-breaker 12-10. From there on though it was smooth sailing as Tien clinched his place in the last 16 in straight sets.
Sonego v Tien Prediction
Learner Tien’s youth gives him a good chance here to make it through, especially on a surface where Sonego has shown in the past that there is a chance he could get rattled. At 6/5 to win, Tien’s odds are worth considering.
