Alexander Zverev v Tommy Paul Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and interestingly, Paul has won both times – at the 2020 Acapulco Open and the 2022 Indian Wells Masters.
Zverev Makes it 6-0 with Humbert Win
Ugo Humbert became the first player this season to take a set off Alexander Zverev but that’s where the resistance ended as the German romped to the Australian Open quarterfinal for the fourth time in his career.
A semifinalist here last year – before Daniil Medvedev got the better of him – Zverev looked to be headed down a familiar path this tournament when he raced off to an easy win in the set but Humbert then came back into the contest.
Zverev dropped his serve on two successive occasions in the second set, allowing Humbert to level things out after 69 minutes in the encounter.
Humbert pushed the world number two for a bit in the third set too but never came close to getting the better of his serve. Zverev got his first opportunity to get the better of Humbert’s serve and delivered the right blow before breaking Humbert twice in the fourth set to seal his quarterfinal berth.
With a 2-0 record at the United Cup before this and straight-set wins over Lucas Pouille, Pedro Martinez and Jacob Fearnley here, it takes his 2025 record to six wins and no losses.
Can Zverev make it seven in a row?
Paul Eases Past Injured Fokina
Tommy Paul needed a mere hour and 27 minutes and the loss of just three games to seal a straight-set win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the fourth round.
The American has grown in confidence as the tournament has progressed, as can be seen from the fact that he was taken to five sets by Christopher O’Connell in the first round, dropped one set in the second round against Kei Nishikori and was then then involved in a tough three-setter in round three.
Here, in the fourth round, Paul didn’t have much competition from Fokina, who was broken a whopping seven times in the encounter. Paul faced three break-points but was never tested enough as he ran away to his easiest win of the tournament.
A winner at the Dallas Open, Queen’s Championships and Stockholm Open last year, Paul has also been to the semifinal at the Australian Open once before. Can he now topple the world number two to get there again?
Zverev v Paul Prediction
While Paul’s confidence has been on show for everyone to see, Zverev’s in the kind of form where he could test some of the best in the business – Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic included.
While Paul might not go away in a hurry in this match, Zverev can be expected to find a way through this.
