Aryna Sabalenka v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Pavlyuchenkova leads Sabalenka 2-1. This comes with a caveat and that is the fact that they haven’t faced off since 2021.
Pavlyuchenkova won in Toronto in 2019 and at Roland-Garros in 2021 while Sabalenka sneaked in with a victory in Madrid in 2021.
Sabalenka Crushes Mirra Again
Aryna Sabalenka was facing Mirra Andreeva yet again this year, having earlier met the Russian on her way to winning the Brisbane International. And for the second time in a row, the Belarusian proved to be too strong for Andreeva.
Double defending champion Sabalenka was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Andreeva which meant she has now won 18 matches in a row in this competition. She was on court for a mere 62 minutes.
Speaking to the press at the end of the match, Sabalenka admitted she preferred the warmer conditions which helped her serve more than it had in her third round victory over Clara Tauson. She added she hoped the conditions would remain the same for the rest of the tournament
The trouble is that the forecast for the match-day is for a maximum temperature of 28 degrees centigrade, which could go lower to around 20 degrees depending on when the match will be played.
Pavlyuchenkova Aided by Vekic Injury
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova faced break-points in two of her service games in her fourth round match against Donna Vekic but saved them both. In the tie-breaker that followed, Pavlyuchenkova then raced away to a 7-0 win to set up a delicious rest of the match.
Unfortunately for Vekic, she suffered a knee injury during the second set and that signalled the end of the possibility that things could get thrilling.
The Russian ran through the second set with Vekic getting broken three times even as Pavlyuchenkova was forced to save just one break-point in the set.
This followed wins over Yue Yuan, Anastasia Potapova and Laura Siegemund in the previous three rounds for Pavlyuchenkova, reaching the quarterfinals at this event for the fourth time in her career.
The only time she has gone beyond this stage at any Grand Slam was at the 2021 French Open.
Sabalenka v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction
While Pavlyuchenkova has done something not too many would have imagined following her struggles and fall in the rankings, it’s tough to see her trouble Sabalenka even if the weather turns colder and the world number one struggles a little with her serve.
