Ben Shelton v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece.
Shelton started with a victory at the 2022 Cincinnati Open in a first round match that went the distance before Sonego levelled things off with a four-set win at the 2023 French Open.
Shelton Ends Monfils’ Dream Run
Ben Shelton might have been stretched to the limits by the age-defying Gael Monfils but it was the American who came through their fourth round match in the end.
Unfortunately for Monfils, he was unable to complete the encounter, retiring from the match at the start of the fourth set after falling two sets to one behind.
And even then, it was a match of a few inches here or there, with Shelton winning two of the three tie-breakers that was on show in a match that went on for three hours.
Shelton won 81% of his first serve points and was broken just once in the match while getting the better of Monfils’ serve on two occasions – including once at the start of the fourth set.
This win follows Shelton’s fighting wins over Brandon Nakashima, Roberto Carballes Baena and Lorenzo Musetti in the previous three rounds. A quarterfinal here will be his second such appearance at the Australian Open, having made his debut in 2023 with a similar showing.
Then he had lost to Tommy Paul but now has a better chance of making the semifinal given he’s playing a surprise quarterfinalist.
Sonego Teaches Learner a Lesson
One of the biggest surprises of the competition, Learner Tien saw his journey at the 2025 Australian Open end in four sets at the hands of Lorenzo Sonego.
Sonego himself hasn’t done very well in hardcourt competitions in the past with his previous best in 14 attempts in the hardcourt Grand Slams – Australian Open and US Open – being his lone entry into the third round in 2022 here.
The Italian has also never made the quarterfinals of any hardcourt Masters 1000 event but last year, Sonego won his maiden outdoor hardcourt title which came in Winston-Salem.
In the fourth round against the 121st-ranked Tien, Sonego was on court for two hours and 24 minutes before winning 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Can he now show his new-found strength against Shelton as well?
