Alexander Zverev v Novak Djokovic Head to Head
There have been 13 previous meetings between these two players and Djokovic leads 9-4. In outdoor hardcourt competitions, Djokovic makes it 5-1, having last won at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, also their last meeting.
The last time that Zverev beat the 24-time Grand Slam winner was at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Zverev Digs Deep against Paul
Tommy Paul looked to have given it his all in his quarterfinals and while Alexander Zverev looked to be in trouble at various points during their match, his tenacity stood out.
And it was that tenacity that helped Zverev take down Paul in a fighting, four-setter that went on for three hours and 32 minutes.
Twice Paul had the chance to serve out the set – in the first and second – and on both occasions, Zverev rose higher, breaking his American opponent to take it to the tie-breaker. And in the tie-breaker that followed, Zverev showed why he’s ranked second in the world.
Paul didn’t give in though, pocketing the third set with two breaks of serve only for Zverev to come roaring back in the fourth.
The German would be a tad disappointed with getting broken four times in the match but with a first serve of 69% and a first serve percentage won at 72%, he would be reasonably satisfied with his overall serving effort.
This win makes it 7-0 for Zverev for the season.
Djokovic Stuns Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz’s performance looked to be going to script when the 1/2 favourite in the quarterfinal pocketed the first set against Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic, however, is made of sterner stuff and he quickly realised he needed to change things around to break his opponent’s rhythm.
A bit of cramping helped the cause, probably got Alcaraz to relax a bit but more importantly, Djokovic began to move things differently on court.
He took some more time with his serving, reduced the rally lengths, suddenly found better serving and when the pressure began to shift, Djokovic made Alcaraz work longer.
And Djokovic, who was coming off successive straight-set wins over tricky opponents in the form of Tomas Machac and Jiri Lehecka in the previous two rounds, admitted later he would have loved for this to be a final.
He added:
“One of the most epic matches I have played on this court, on any court really.”
What needs to now be seen is if he can repeat the dose against Zverev who is still hunting for his maiden Grand Slam.
Zverev v Djokovic Prediction
After the kind of form that Djokovic has shown over his previous three wins, it would be tough to bet against him. Expecting Zverev to give Djokovic a bit of a run, even take him to a tie-breaker or two, but beyond that it’s tough to see the German take him down.
