Having announced herself in 2024 by clinching the Hua Hin title, the first of her career, Rebecca Sramkova hasn’t quite made the kind of start to 2025 she would have liked.
In both her first round matches at Brisbane and Hobart, Srmakova was put to the sword by her opponents, losing to Elina Avanesyan and McCartney Kessler.
And while Sramkova finally registered a win, defeating Katie Volynets in a hard-fought three-setter at the Australian Open, she fell away in a hurry in the second round.
Sure, it was Iga Swiatek she lost to and she could be forgiven for winning just two games in the encounter but she could be a touch wary entering this encounter after the kind of start she has made.
Cocciaretto on a Five-Match Losing Streak
Having finished the previous season with three defeats in a row including one at the Billie Jean King Cup, Elisabetta Cocciaretto has done nothing to correct that this year.
The world number 56 tried to put up a fighting display in the first set of her season opener at the Hobart International but was then bagelled in the second set by Veronika Kudermetova.
This was followed by a straight-set loss at the hands of Diana Shnaider in the first round of the Australian Open, making it five successive defeats at the highest level for the Italian player.
She now has a chance to change things around against a struggling Sramkova but on a surface that is more likely to favour her opponent.
