Mirra Andreeva v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head
The only previous time they faced off was at the 2024 French Open and Andreeva had won that in straight sets.
Andreeva in Line to Get Back to Top 10
Mirra Andreeva had begun the season ranked 16th in the world and she inched forward to 15th and then 14th before winning her maiden WTA 1000 title in Dubai last month.
That performance helped her storm into the top 10, starting the new week at ninth before a week of break meant she had gone back down to 11th.
The good news for Andreeva, other than the fact that she is in some excellent form with her 13-3 win-loss record for the week, is that she enters this competition having lost in the first round here last year.
With an opening bye, she has already added some ranking points to her kitty this year but her aim would be a lot bigger. A deep run into the second week with a possible quarterfinal meeting with Jessica Pegula could go a long way in helping her return to the top 10 again.
She starts things off here against a player who hasn’t won much this season.

Gracheva Surprise for Kvitova
Well Petra Kvitova is returning to competitive tennis this year following a maternity break and she is still some way away from her best.
And while Varvara Gracheva has never been ranked better than 39th in the world and has currently fallen to 70th, she would have fancied her chances in her opener against Kvitova.
In a match lasting two hours and 23 minutes, Gracheva found a way to get past Kvitova, winning a gritty encounter 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to seal her second round berth.
Having made the fourth round at this tournament in 2023, Gracheva was down a break on two occasions in the first set but fought back to level proceedings. The third time that Kvitova broke her serve, she managed to clinch the set.
In the second set, however, Gracheva earned a decisive break in the sixth game and then traded four breaks of serve in the decider to take it to 4-4. A break to 15 in the ninth game was followed by Gracheva serving it out.
Andreeva v Gracheva Predictions
Andreeva could face a bit of a fight but should still come through in straight sets and carve out a place in the third round.
