Tomas Machac v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head
This will be their first meeting.
In-Form Machac Hoping to Better Indian Wells Record
The first time Tomas Machac participated in this tournament in Indian Wells was in 2022 and he was forced to make it through the qualifiers. He had defeated Alexei Popyrin in his opener there and lost in the second round.
Machac then played here again in 2024 when he had a direct entry, beat Stan Wawrinka before Adrian Mannarino got the better of him.
This time around, Machac has taken a step further by getting a direct bye into the second round as a seeded player and will start off with some excellent form under his belt.
He is coming off his maiden ATP title under his belt that he won at the Mexican Open. Machac overcame a tricky set of opponents in the form of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Brandon Nakashima, Learner Tien and Jakub Mensik to lift the title and in turn has broken into the top 20.

Watanuki Wins First Match in Four Months
Yosuke Watanuki last won a main draw match at the tour level at the Shanghai Masters last October.
Since then he has been forced to feature at the lower circuit to try and accumulate points given his rather low ranking. While he has done reasonably well there, Watanuki’s performances at the highest level haven’t quite been up to the mark.
There were the qualifiers at the Australian Open where he fell without making the main draw, and this was followed by a repeat of that same showing at Marseille, Doha and Dubai. Watanuki failed to enter the round one of any of those competitions.
Which is why, just qualifying for this event with wins over Mattia Bellucci and Rudy Quan would have been pleasing by itself.
And then to go past Alexander Bublik 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to win his first main draw match in four months is an icing on the cake.
Machac v Watanuki Predictions
Machac should not have too many worries here with a straightforward, straight-set win looking most likely for the world number 20.
Machac v Watanuki Tips
