Marta Kostyuk v Robin Montgomery Preview
Head-to-Head: Kostyuk and Montgomery have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Aided by a helpful draw, Marta Kostyuk had made it to the semifinal of this competition last year before Iga Swiatek ended her journey there.
She will take confidence from that showing last year but this year, Kostyuk’s form has been a tad up and down. As a result of that, Kostyuk has won and lost six matches apiece, which includes three first round losses.
The last time she took to court was in Merida last week and rather surprisingly, Kostyuk lost to Daria Saville in her opener.
Kostyuk had a first round bye here and will hope to get herself back into the winning ways when she takes on the 107th-ranked Robin Montgomery.
Montgomery, who had never won a round at the Indian Wells Open before this, fished out her first ever victory here when she overcame Jule Niemeier.
In a match that went on for two hours and 25 minutes, Montgomery clinched a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win to reach the second round. She had earlier made the semifinal at the Auckland Open but failed to qualify for the Australian Open before taking a break of about two months.

Linda Noskova v Lulu Sun Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players with both winning one apiece. Sun won at Cincinnati last year before Noskova levelled things out in Monterrey, also in 2024.
Linda Noskova enters this competition on the back of successive third round appearances in Indian Wells over the last two seasons.
And judging by the manner in which she has played this season and more vitally how her opponent, Lulu Sun has gone about her business, it looks likely that Noskova could be a shoo-in for another third round spot.
That’s because Noskova, who had a first round bye here, is already coming off a semifinal appearance in Abu Dhabi and another quarterfinal showing in Dubai.
On the other hand, Sun had a 1-8 win-loss record for the season before this before she shocked Rebecca Sramkova in her opener in Indian Wells. She was on court for two hours and nine minutes before winning 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (2).
