Matteo Berrettini v Christopher O’Connell Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these players and Berrettini has won both times. They faced off in Shanghai last year and followed that up with a meeting as recently as two weeks ago in Dubai where Berrettini won their second round match again.
Matteo Berrettini has had a reasonable time of late on the tour with quarterfinal appearances at both, the Qatar Open and ATP Dubai.
In getting to that stage of the competition, he managed to get past Novak Djokovic in one of the rounds signalling the kind of form that Berrettini has regained since returning from his fitness-induced absence.
This was after Berrettini had made a slow start to the season, winning just one match from the four he had played. He now plays an opponent whom he had defeated two weeks ago in Dubai.
Christopher O’Connell was a 3/4 favourite against Roberto Carballes Baena in their first round encounter and he managed to live up to those odds.
Having made the second round in Adelaide and in Doha earlier in the season, O’Connell was forced to come through the qualifiers in Dubai. He got past the injured Grigor Dimitrov before Berrettini eased past him.
By defeating Carballes Baena, O’Connell has made it to the second round again, something that he had done last year too in Indian Wells. Tough to see him get past his Italian opponent here though.
Berrettini v O’Connell prediction: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 4/6

Ugo Humbert v Kei Nishikori Preview
Head-to-Head: Humbert and Nishikori have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Ugo Humbert has already won a title this season – in Marseille – and had made the fourth round at the Australian Open earlier in the year.
Unfortunately for Humbert, he did not have a great outing in Dubai where, following his first round win over Jiri Lehecka, he lost to Tallon Griekspoor in the second despite starting out a 3/10 favourite.
He now enters the Indian Wells Masters where he had made the third round at each of his previous appearances and will know that a win here is all it would take for him to defend his points from this tournament.
Up against him is a player who has been around on the circuit for nearly two decades and has featured in this tournament since 2008. Kei Nishikori, who last played in Indian Wells in 2021 enters this match on the back of a near-upset win.
The Japanese player overcame Jaume Munar in his opener, overcoming him in a match lasting three hours. He won 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3) to progress to the second round.
Nishikori had earlier reached the final of the Hong Kong Open but then won just two of the following seven matches since.
Humbert v Nishikori prediction: Humbert to win: 1/3
