Their only previous meeting came at the 2024 US Open where, rather surprisingly, Diallo got the better of Fils in four sets.
Fils Hoping to Make up for Lost Ground
Having made the third round at this tournament last year, Arthur Fils will look to emulate that showing again this season and all he has to do is to get the better of an 88th-ranked opponent.
Fils has a couple of worries though – his own form and a defeat to this very opponent late last year.
While Fils could attribute the latter of those two problems to late season fatigue after a gruelling year of tennis, his own form this season will be a bother.
That’s because in the four tournaments he has played so far in 2025, Fils has won a mere five matches. This is the world number 21 we are talking about.
He had made the third round at the Australian Open but a loss to Ugo Humbert followed before he went down in the second round at Rotterdam and the first round in Dubai. Can he turn things around in this one?

Diallo Saves Match-Points Before Winning
Gabriel Diallo was 10/11 going into his opening round match against Zhizhen Zhang and the closeness of the eventual encounter looked to have justified those odds.
In a match that lasted two hours and 41 minutes, Diallo came away a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7) winner to make the second round.
While the first two sets had similar scripts as the two players got broken twice apiece, the third one saw a cagier performance as both, Zhang and Diallo refused to bow out.
There were a few break-points on show and Zhang event saved three match-points on his own serve before the set went into a tie-breaker.
Here Zhang had match-points at 6-5 and 7-6 but Diallo saved them both before clinching the win off his fourth opportunity. He has a tough one here against Fils though.

While things might not have quite gone Fils way so far this season, we think he has enough of a game to tame Diallo and move into the third. Might see some fight but we still expect the well-rested Fils to come through in two.
