Jasmine Paolini v Iva Jovic Preview
Head-to-Head: Paolini and Jovic have never faced off in a competitive match before this.
Jasmine Paolini will be reasonably satisfied with the start she has made to the season but she did drop a few ranking points when she fell in the third round of the WTA Dubai after having gone into that tournament as a defending champion.
Other than that, Paolini has had starts at each of the competition she has played – at the United Cup she won both her singles matches to guide Italy to the quarterfinals before making it to the third round at the Australian Open and third round in Doha as well.
The Italian number one had also made the fourth round at this tournament last year and will hope to not drop too many points as she takes on the 157th-ranked Iva Jovic.
Jovic was a heavy favourite coming into her opener against Julia Grabher who has had a huge struggle for form. However, 36 minutes into the contest, Jovic had lost the first set and at 5-5 in the second, was staring at a pressure tie-breaker.
She broke Grabher in the next game before serving it out and then bagelled her opponent in the final set to complete her second main draw victory of the season.
It might get even more challenging for the 157th-ranked player as she takes to court for her second round encounter here.
Paolini v Jovic prediction: Paolini to win in straight sets: 4/5

Diana Shnaider v Alycia Parks Preview
Head-to-Head: There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. Shnaider won on the clay courts of Charleston in 2023 while Parks surprised her opponent in Doha earlier this year.
Diana Shnaider roared into contention for a top-10 spot last season which was a huge achievement given that she had begun the year ranked 93rd in the world.
This year, however, the 20-year-old Russian hasn’t quite been able to turn her momentum from the previous season into any kind of form. She has got starts, sure, but Shnaider’s inability to win more than two matches in a tournament has been surprising.
She made the quarterfinals in Adelaide and lost in the third round at the Australian Open before falling in three of her following five matches – one of which came to Parks.
Alycia Parks has fallen from her career-best ranking of 40th – she is 61st at the moment – but has already sealed off her best ever performance at the Indian Wells Open.
In her fifth appearance here, Parks had made it to the main draw just twice before this and never beyond the first round. This time around, she ousted the struggling Anna Kalinskaya to find a place in round two.
Things could get quite close between these two despite the gulf in their rankings.
Shnaider v Parks prediction: Three sets in the match: 5/4
