Danielle Collins v Elina Svitolina Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players, both of which came in the first rounds of tournaments – 2020 Brisbane and 2023 Canadian Open. Collins won both in straight sets.
Collins Makes a Struggling Return to Tennis
Danielle Collins had last featured in competitive at the Australian Open where she had won her second round match amid jeers and boos and then went on to lose in the third round to the eventual winner Madison Keys.
Since then, Collins had opted out of competitive tennis and returned after nearly 50 days of inactivity. And the rustiness was there for everyone to see.
Taking on Hailey Baptiste, Collins needed two hours and 26 minutes to come through and enter the third round for the first time in this tournament since 2021.
She lost the first set after squandered three set-points on her opponent’s serve and then came back to clinch the next two 6-2, 6-4 despite getting broken three times in the decider.
Leading Baptiste 5-1 in the final set at one stage, Collins failed to serve out twice before breaking her 100th-ranked opponent in the 10th game of the set.
Collins will hope to have shrugged off that rustiness when she takes on a far superior opponent in Elina Svitolina.

Svitolina Squanders Match-Points in Krueger Win
Elina Svitolina had a chance to win her second round match in straight sets but failed to convert two match-points in the second set before grabbing the victory in the third.
Taking on an in-form Krueger in her second round match following her indifferent form since Australian Open, Svitolina looked to be on her way to an easy win when she grabbed the first set with three breaks of serves.
Krueger came into her own in the second set but couldn’t shake off Svitolina’s stickiness as they kept trading service breaks to take it into a tie-breaker.
There Svitolina had a match-point at 6-5 and then at 7-6 but missed both before Krueger won the set off her second set-point at 9-8.
An early break of serve in the decider seemed to have calmed Svitolina’s nerves before she broke Krueger again in the fifth game. While she failed to serve it out at 5-2, she won it 6-4 to record her seventh win of the season to go with four losses.
