Frances Tiafoe v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in the 2023 Miami Masters and Tiafoe had needed three sets to win it.
Tiafoe Stretched to Two Tie-Breakers by Dzumhur
Damir Dzumhur had been showing some bright form but quite a lot of that was on clay, his favourite surface. Frances Tiafoe wasn’t expected to endure much trouble when he took on Dzumhur in the second round following an opening bye.
As it turned out, Tiafoe was forced to be on court for two hours and 12 minutes, and even save four set-points in the second set before edging past Dzumhur.
Tiafoe won 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) to come through in a match filled with breaks of serves – both players losing their serve five times.
This is now the fifth tournament in a row this year that Tiafoe has won his opening round match. That’s the good news for the American.
The bad news? He has lost his very next match every single time.

Watanuki Benefits from Machac Injury
Yosuke Watanuki had qualified for this event after shocking Mattia Bellucci in the qualifiers and then edged past the 7/11 favourite Alexander Bublik in the first round.
The dream run for Watanuki, however, looked to be ending when he was drawn against the in-form Tomas Machac who then won the first set in their second round encounter.
Machac trailed Watanuki 4-2 in the second set before calling him over and calling it quits.
What this means is that Watanuki has now made it to the third round of a Masters 1000 event for just the second time on his career, having done that in the 2024 Shanghai Masters.
Can he now pull off the greatest win of his career?
