Qinwen Zheng v Lulu Sun Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the 2024 Wimbledon with Sun winning that opening round encounter in three sets.
Zheng Finally Wins, Beats Azarenka
The last time Qinwen Zheng won a competitive match was at the Australian Open, nearly two months ago. She had beaten Anca Todoni the first round there before Laura Siegemund had surprised her in the second round.
Not too many had known at that time but Zheng would later reveal she had been suffering from a mystery illness which had made it difficult to prepare and forced her to pull out from the United Cup and other tune-up tournaments as well
This was followed by appearances in just two appearances for Zheng, at Doha and Dubai and at both, she fell in her openers, losing to Ons Jabeur and Peyton Stearns.
Which is why, a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Victoria Azarenka in the second round here following an opening bye, might go a long way in earning Zheng some breathing space.
Can she now continue in the same vein against another surprise winner from the previous round?

Sun Shocks Noskova
Having hit a career-high ranking of 39th in the world last year thanks to her quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon 2024, Lulu Sun’s form seems to be tanking. So was her ranking as she fell to 49th in the lead-up to this competition.
In fact, coming into the Indian Wells Open, Sun had lost eight of the nine matches she had featured in and her only win had come at the Abu Dhabi when she overcame the equally struggling Caroline Garcia.
Here, Sun seems to have turned things around dramatically.
In the first round, the Kiwi was a 5/2 underdog against Rebecca Sramkova but managed to edge her out in a thrid set tie-breaker. Things got even better in the second round against Linda Noskova as she started out at 11/2 odds but came away a 6-1, 6-4 winner to reach the third round here on her debut.
Can Sun take advantage of the out of sorts Zheng here?
Zheng v Sun Predictions
It’s interesting to note that Zheng starts off a 1/5 favourite despite how she’s gone about her business all year. Then again, Sun’s form had been equally bad before this tournament but we still think this match could be a lot closer than what those odds suggest.
