Alexei Popyrin v Marcos Giron Head to Head
They first faced off in the qualifiers of the Canadian Open in 2022 where Giron won. Popyrin made it 1-1 in the 2023 Adelaide International.
Popyrin Doubles His Win Count
Alexei Popyrin had had a horrible start to the season when he lost four successive matches in the first one and a half months of the season without winning even one.
At Dubai two weeks ago, Popyrin finally won the opener but that had come against Hady Habib, a wildcard entrant before the Aussie went down to Marin Cilic in the second.
Which is why, despite being seeded and earning a first round bye here, Popyrin wasn’t quite the favourite going into is second round encounter against Zizou Bergs.
And which is also why, Popyrin’s straight-set win, albeit in a stretched manner in a match that went on for two hours and eight minutes, would have been a huge relief for him.
He came through 7-6 (4), 7-5 to seal a spot in the third round of this tournament for the first time in his career.
Can he now pull off another victory against the local man?

Giron Surprises Ruud
Marcos Giron had been stretched by Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round here and went into his second round match against the world number five Casper Ruud as a distant 7/5 underdog.
In a tight encounter that went on for two hours and 41 minutes, Giron found a way past Ruud, winning 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2 to enter the third round of this competition for the first time since 2019.
Giron managed to hold on to his serve throughout the first set despite facing four set-points in the 10th game there. He was then broken in the very first game of the second set before Ruud wrapped it up with a second break of serve in the ninth.
Almost as retribution, Giron got the better of Ruud’s serve three times in the final set to take a 5-0 lead and while he dropped his serve once, he clinched the win soon after.
Popyrin v Giron Predictions
This could turn out to be a close encounter but Giron might just hold the edge given the crowd support and his slightly better form all season.
