Jasmine Paolini v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head
While they have never faced off at the highest level before, these two have met three times on the ITF circuit between 2015 and 2019. Paolini won every single time.
Paolini Has Trouble against Jovic
Following on from a first round bye, Jasmine Paolini did not look her best in her second round victory over Iva Jovic and would just be relieved to have made the cut.
In a match that went into the third set and saw Paolini need two hours and 12 minutes, she edged out the American wildcard 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-3.
This could have gone the other way too with Jovic grabbing an early break of serve and then pushing the set into a tie-breaker after getting broken back.
While Paolini won the tie-breaker, she struggled to make things work in the second set, losing six games in a row to allow Jovic to come back into the encounter.
They traded breaks in four successive games in the decider before Paolini earned the decisive break in the eighth game.
With this victory, Paolini has notched up her seventh of the season to go with four defeats. While that’s not a record to be scoffed at, she will need to run deeper into such big-ticket tournaments to maintain her top-10 ranking.

Cristian Shock for Fernandez
Despite starting out a 13/5 underdog in her match against Leylah Fernandez, Jaqueline Cristian found herself a way to deliver under pressure and reach the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the fourth time in her career.
Cristian, who had earlier also made the third round at the Australian Open this season, defeated Fernandez 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in a cracking encounter that went on for three hours and 17 minutes.
Having demolished Veronika Kudermetova in the first round, Cristian was down a set and 1-3 in the second before missing three chances to win the set.
In the tie-breaker that followed, Cristian missed her fourth set-point before levelling things out.
The final set was more or less one-way traffic as Cristian broke the Canadian three times to seal off the victory.
