Madison Keys v Elise Mertens Head to Head
In five previous meetings, Keys has won three and Mertens has clinched the other two. Interestingly, Keys had won their matches in 2017, 2019 and 2021 while Mertens won in 2023 and 2024 – the last of which came at the US Open.
Keys Makes a Winning Return
Madison Keys had last played a match at the Australian Open and we all know how things went for her in that tournament. In a shocking result, Keys had sent Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka out of that competition on her way to the title.
Unfortunately for Keys, she managed to injure herself on the way to that maiden Grand Slam title and was sidelined for nearly a month and a half.
Which is why, all eyes were on Keys when she took to court for the first time since that victory. And Keys left no doubt about how well her tennis has come along.
In a match that lasted a touch over an hour, Keys demolished the in-form Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-0 to reach the third round. And she will now have a good chance to do one better that she had done here last time when she takes to court for a place in the fourth round.

Mertens Overcomes Birrell
It was a straight-set win in the end but not before Elise Mertens faced some tough moments in her second round match against Kimberly Birrell.
With a 13-4 win-loss record for the season, Mertens had entered this tournament on the back of some excellent form and it was no surprise she was a 1/3 favourite heading into this encounter following that opening bye.
Mertens made it her 14th win for the year but in doing so, she was forced to fight back from being a break down in both sets. Eventually she found a way to grab the victory, her sixth in opening rounds of competitions in as many attempts this season.
Things could get a lot tougher now though as she takes to court against not only the fifth-ranked player in the world but one who has a Grand Slam title under her belt.
