Bencic Stretched But Ends Anisimova’s Run
Amanda Anisimova had won a WTA 1000 tournament in Doha last month and for her to face one of the most in-form player on the women’s circuit in the second round might have been a touch unfair.
That’s how the cookie crumbles though at times and Bencic continued to show why she has been revered by fans and experts alike as she found a way to get past Anisimova.
Bencic needed two hours and 25 minutes to get through the match with Anisimova taking it to the third set but by then the American looked spent. And Bencic took full advantage of that.
She broke Anisimova in the very second game before consolidating that with a second break of serve in the sixth game of the final set.
The Swiss player hadn’t featured in this tournament last year and hadn’t made the third round here since 2019. She will look to add another deep run to her kitty.
