There have been eight previous meetings between these two players going back to 2020 and Sakkari has a winning record against Gauff, having grabbed five victories. Their most recent match came at the previous year’s Indian Wells Open where Sakkari had won that semifinal in three sets.
Gauff Faces Trouble against Uchijima
For some strange reason, Cori Gauff’s season has taken a bit of a turn following the kind of start she had had.
Having won five matches in a row to help USA clinch the United Cup, Gauff then added four further victories to enter the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.
Paula Badosa ended her nine-match winning streak there and she then lost to Marta Kostyuk in Doha and McCartney Kessler in Dubai – making it three successive defeats.
Gauff would have expected to get back to her winning ways when she took on Moyuka Uchijima in her opener here. And while that did happen it wasn’t before she was forced into a third set in a two hours and 35 minutes long encounter.
And she was broken twice in the decider from being 4-0 up, and having missed four match-points.

Sakkari Eases Past Tomova
Maria Sakkari’s poor form this season had made one question her chances against Viktoriya Tomova in their second round match.
The 2024 Indian Wells Open finalist had, after all, won a mere three matches all of this season before this tournament, to go with eight losses.
Which is why a 6-0, 6-3 drubbing of Tomova following a first round bye should give Sakkari some relief.
Whether it would give her any confidence remains to be seen because she would be up against the world number three next. What Sakkari would like to take with her into the encounter is her head to head record against Gauff.
