Grigor Dimitrov v Gael Monfils Head to Head
There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Monfils has a 4-2 record against him. Five of these matches came between 2011 and 2016 while their most recent encounter happened last year at Wimbledon where Dimitrov ran away a straight-set winner.
Dimitrov Shows Fitness against Borges
Following his semifinal appearance at the Brisbane International, which was also his first competition of the season, Grigor Dimitrov has undergone a series of fitness-related issues.
And that had led him to retire from three of his matches even as he lost in one other – making it four successive losses coming into this tournament.
Not much was known about Dimitrov’s fitness as a result, which is why the manner in which he demolished Nuno Borges in the second round here would have gone a long way in quelling some of those question-marks.
Dimitrov needed an hour and 33 minutes to get the better of Borges, winning 6-3, 6-4 and sealed his spot in the third round in this tournament for the second year running.

Monfils in Scrappy Win Over Korda
Gael Monfils might have taken some time and was also forced to put up a fighting display but he won his 11th match of this season to go with just three losses when he overcame Sebastian Korda in the second round.
With an Auckland Open title under his belt and a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open, Monfils was in fine fettle coming into this tournament.
And he showed that those results were no fluke when he eased past Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round here.
Korda proved to be a stickier opponent but Monfils ground his way to a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) win in just over two hours to advance to the third round. Korda had his chances in the second set when he took a 4-2 lead but Monfils quickly killed that off with a break in the very next game.
With a fourth round appearance here last year too, Monfils will have a chance to emulate that when he faces Dimitrov.
