Francisco Cerundolo v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head
They have never faced off before this.
Cerundolo Scrapes Past McDonald
Francisco Cerundo was coming from three successive weeks of clay court tennis in South America, having also made the final at one of them.
Sure, the courts in Indian Wells have not been the quickest in the world, but there were signs that he might not have the easiest time adjusting to these courts to begin with.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Cerundolo took an early 2-0 lead in the final set but dropped his serve twice to Mackenzie McDonald, losing the set in the process.
And when he went 4-2 ahead, only to get broken back, there was that worry the same pattern might emerge.
It was in the ensuing tie-breaker that the Argentine finally found a way to get past McDonald and from that point onward, he started to get more and more control. Cerundolo broke McDonald three times in the final set to notch up his 11th win of the season to with just five defeats.

van de Zandschulp Shocks Djokovic
A lucky loser in the tournament following his qualifying defeat, Botic van de Zandschulp was fortunate to have been drawn against the injured Nick Kyrgios in the first round.
Kyrgios put up a fight but was forced to retire in the second set awarding van de Zandschulp just his second win of the season. His only previous victory had come against Abedallah Shelbayh.
In the second round, facing up to Novak Djokovic, van de Zandschulp came up with a stunning performance in just over two hours of tennis – winning it in three sets.
He won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 after breaking Djokovic five times and grabbing a shock spot in the third round.
