Magda Linette v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head
There have been five previous meetings between these two players and Pavlyuchenkova leads 3-2 on head to head.
It began with Pavlyuchenkova winning in their first three meetings while Linette clinching the last two times they faced off including earlier this year in Abu Dhabi.
Linette Still Struggling to Go Deep into Tournaments
Magda Linette is coming off a second round appearance at the Indian Wells Open and to be fair to her that was about par for the course. That’s given her form and the kind of draw that Linette had in that tournament.
For Linette to overcome Peyton Stearns in the first round there was a bit of a shock, especially given that she had gone into that match as a 7/5 underdog (with bet365).
But in the second round, Linette faced Jessica Pegula who ended her campaign in straight sets.
And this has been the story of her season.
There was a quarterfinal appearance for the Polish player in Abu Dhabi and she then made the third round in Doha but other than that Linette hasn’t won successive matches in any competition.
Interestingly, bookmakers have pegged her as a second favourite here with bet365 offering 13/10 for her win.
Pavlyuchenkova Hoping to Recreate Australian Open Magic
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had ended the previous season ranked 30th in the world and then went on to make it as far as the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. It took Aryna Sabalenka three sets to get past Pavlyuchenkova in that encounter, signalling the kind of opponent the Russian is when in full flow.
Unfortunately for Pavlyuchenkova, she has done nothing of note since then.
She has featured in two tournaments, in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and won just one match across those, with one of those losses coming at the hands of Linette when she was forced to retire due to an illness.
It was this same illness that had forced Pavlyuchenkova to withdraw from the Indian Wells Open too and that could play a part coming into the Miami Open.
Viral illnesses do have a bad habit of sapping athletes of their strength for a while.
Linette v Pavlyuchenkova Predictions
On paper, Pavlyuchenkova has a good chance here but for the unknown status of her illness. If she isn’t fully fit we could see Linette have a decent chance and at 13/10, these could be tempting odds given Pavlyuchenkova’s illness concerns.
